“My photographs have always been about observation, perception, and discovery of what isn’t immediately apparent. I want my work to transcend the documentary nature of the medium so that the images evoke a sense of mystery, stimulating the viewer to look closely, and then to look again.
Over a decade ago I started making zone plate images, a type of lensless photography that creates a “glow” in the highlights and blurs the edges, infusing the forms with a glint of the numinous. I love the elusive and haunting quality of these images and the dark beauty they convey visually.
With a zone plate, every image is an experiment. Since much of the process is unpredictable, and my attention is on the feeling of experience not content, I am usually amazed at the shapes and forms that have appeared in the print.”
